about

“Father’s Daughter” was originally written for my band Speed Of Life back in 2007. We recorded a version but during our tour the song evolved quite a bit and I felt the need to redo it when I was in LA. I remember writing the lyrics almost like a poem late one night up in my loft bed in Brooklyn. The first line “He rests his head on water” actually came from sleeping next to a humidifier! But I liked the visual and the lyrics flowed quickly from there. I was fascinated by the idea of how most women’s first male encounter with love is through their relationship with their father. This song is simply about the passing of the crown from the ideal a woman may create from observing her father to the man she has chosen to be with. While they may have their differences it’s the child like part of them that forms a friendship to create a higher level of love.

Father’s Daughter
Lyrics & Music By John Zay

He rests his head on water
Flows with is soothing sound
Below some fathers’ daughter
Gives him his first crown
He swims into her stare
She takes him to her eyes
Fingers through her hair
Reflections of her sighs

Lets be one
Take my heart to the sun

Differences pull the reigns
But children inside relate
Freedom dives through disorder
And worry has to wait
So he takes some fathers daughter
And gives her, her first kiss
Beneath the soothing water
Above the clouds in bliss

Lets be one
Take my heart to the sun
Lets be one
Take my heart to the sun
