about

Something’s Going Down lyrically started from the chorus as a happy song. There was a time when The Mighty Rollers were getting interest from a big German Producer. We began recording songs seriously at this time that both Rico and myself wrote. We also tried writing new material together and this song is the best result of that. It started with Jan Ole’s drum beat. I played a chord progression over it and Rico came up with a verse melody. I came up with the chorus chords and started singing the lyrics and melody for that. It was supposed to be a good feeling, Something good was about to happen. Unfortunately, as these things often go, the arrangement with our producer was almost sabotaged by an outsider, eventually became a waiting game and ultimately imploded. Tired of the late night gigs and often sleeping in ’til early afternoon I realized that it was time to let go and decided to leave Germany for Portugal. But I loved this song and asked the guys if I could finish it on my own and they gave me their blessing. The result is instead of the feeling of a new fresh beginning it became about a bitter ending, a needing to let go and leave the life you are living behind. While in Portugal I often did Duo gigs with Taly Minkov. She had a naturally soulful and super powerful voice that I thought would lend itself great to this song. Her performance exceeded my expectations and I love how her contribution really rounded out the feeling of this song…

lyrics

Something's Going Down
-John Zay & Rico Bowen

I've been walking through the night
getting home at first light
and something's just not right

Gotta a lot of big demands
the whole world is in my hands
Is this my lucky chance?

Cause I've seen this place before
On display just like a whore
and no one's keeping score

I'm still believing there's a reason I'm lost
She's coming through with her love

I feel something, I feel something,
I feel something's going down
I can't trace it, I can't place it
I just know - I gotta leave this town

I've been looking for a sign
as I drown myself in wine
am I running out of time?

Cause when the buzz is wearing down
and the crowd is not around
Can you meet me on the ground

I feel something, I feel something,
I feel something's going down
I can't trace it, I can't place it
I just know - I gotta leave this town
--
There is nothing here for me
I have seen what I need to see
and I'm starting to get bored
same old story I heard before
There is nothing left to say
You got what you wanted anyway
so I'm walking out the door

I feel something, I feel something,
I feel something's going down
I can't trace it, I can't place it
I just know - I gotta leave this town...
