about

Yemaya is an ode to the Ifa/Santeria Goddess of the Ocean. The Ocean is my favorite place to reconnect with myself. When I come out of the salt water that I feel every cell in my body has been renewed. This one constant, water, has been with us through all of our complexities. It can absorb our energy and free us from our emotional chains. Yemaya is a homecoming of sorts after a journey, or when we may have lost our way. The last verse directly talks about Yemaya's power to heal and her infinite patience. She helps us return to our source and find the clarity we need to begin anew. The song is a prayer for us to realize that we are so much more than what we can buy or any meaningless work that only contributes to a stagnant society based on GDP as opposed spiritual, emotional and creative growth. That is the world I would like to see one day...

lyrics

Yemaya
Music and Lyrics by John Zay

Eyes down on the world below
Seems like everybody just wants to know
What’s to come and what’s to go
It makes a difference when you’re looking to grow

I nearly lost my way
but now I’m here to stay

Eyes up to the heavens above
seems like everybody's looking for love
so much work but there’s never enough
we weren’t put here just to buy all this stuff

I nearly lost my way
but now I’m here to stay

Yemaya smooths rocks all the time
she holds us up through the changing tides
cradles us through the days and nights
she gives us life when we’re looking to die

I nearly lost my way
but now I’m here to stay
There's so much more at stake
I nearly lost my way
